Welcome home Michael! - SMcNeill - 02-07-2024

For you folks who might have missed it, we have one of those old time QB64 Royality who's finally found his way back home to us all:   https://qb64phoenix.com/forum/member.php?action=profile&uid=388

Michael Calkins...  Programmer extraordinaire.  One of the original guys from waaaaaay back in our days at the QBasic.com forums, and then also from Galleon's original QB64.net forums.  Everyone give him a big ole, "Howdy!", and a nice, "Welcome Back!"

Personally, I'm quite happy to see you around again, and I'm hoping to catch back up with you whenever you have the time to just sit and waste just shooting the bull together.  Wink

I don't know him, but if he is a real basic crack. . . Welcome!

RE: Welcome home Michael! - Dav - 02-07-2024

He is a talented programmer. The first ones to really mix windows api with qb64 well.  Did some neat things, like showed how to include an icon in a compiled qb64 exe (before it was easily done).  He helped me figure how to get a windows 2000 version of qb64 ide compiled back in the early days.  I use to maintain a win2k version of the ide for each qb64 update after that using his instructions, until major qb64/compiler changes made windows 2000 compatibility impossible.  Glad to see you back, Michael!

mcalkins! Now there's a name I remember well. Welcome back!

Some of Michael's code can be found in the Wiki: https://qb64phoenix.com/qb64wiki/index.php?search=calkins&title=Special%3ASearch&go=Go

There is nothing like 2nd clear thought when it comes to coding/programing. For those of us who struggle with that, it's great to know our wisdom bank just grew. Welcome home.

Welcome back mcalkins!

RE: Welcome home Michael! - mcalkins - 02-09-2024

Thanks. I miss the old community. I recognize a few of you, including steve, terry, and dav. But it seems the old qbasic community is mostly a thing of the past. Those were the good old days, hanging out in the old chatroom with mennonite, matthew, computerghost, newk, kewbie, etc. And exchanging posts with thebob, mac, etc. The old network54 posts are on tapatalk. But tapatalk is effectively unusable. And the old qb64 forums are gone for some reason that i still don't understand. I can't believe nobody had a backup.

I'm really not using qb64 anymore. As i explain in the nibbles c++ repost in the free speech subforum,
i explain that i'm not doing much programming now, and what i am doing currently is mostly just a little bit of assembly. I can do assembly on dosbox on my phone, though typing on the phone is tedious. But for win32 c++, i really need to visit public library computers, and use 86box on them.

I don't know whether to say "regards, michael". I used to do that all the time on the forums, as sort of a trademark or habit. But i actually started it with business emails for my dad's company, and it feels awkward. It might be a good time to stop. I don't use it on reddit. Speaking of which, i am u/exjwpornaddict on reddit, and qbasicmichael on twitter and youtube. But those accounts are all nsfw and potentially offensive.

As the saying goes, "Life abhors a vacuum." I hear it isn't too crazy about brooms, mops, and dustpans, either... but I digress. So I come back after a year off the grid to find MC back here, and listzfr and Chandler at The QBasic Forum. Well, like the other saying goes, "It's a small matrix."
