But Van Halen! Sorry...whilst im sure if you told me a line from a song i may recognise it but for the life of me, I cant name a single song! 

it was the guy with the guitar showing off.  at least recall that.  no need to recall lyrics.
the "1984" album.  was actually a silly record.  also because d.l.roth was their lead singer at the time.  after that ran off to do his own even siller record.  this is just my opinion.
now i have to figure out.  exactly which vanhalen video.  i saw eddie showing off.

A guy showing off on guitar made me instantly think of Hendrix...and Tenacious D!

It wasn't about a guy showing off on guitar, they wrote great songs! "1984" was their hit record but the deep cuts on the earlier albums are killer.
