With the release of the new version, I wanted to take a moment to bring some upcoming issues to light for folks to mull over. For ages now, we've had a Patreon so people can sign up and donate a little money each month to keep the lights on for us and keep the forums and wiki up and running. We haven't pushed it much, nor promoted it much, as our few donors have basically been donating around the same amount as our server costs. We have four donors, earn $18 a month, and in the past our server fees have ran us about $21 per month.
I was recently checking the prices to see how they've changed, and inflation has really changed that dynamic on us. Next April, when our server costs come due once again, the price has raised to about $30 per month from the inflation over the last few years. We're earning $18, we're going to be spending $30, and since we try to pay for a 3-year renewal when we can, that places us at a $12 shortage * 36 months for about a $450 shortfall come the next billing.
That's quite a leap in $$$ to have to cover all at once!!
So here's what you guys need to mull over:
1) If you're donating at one of the low tiers ($3 per month), mull over if you think you can bump that up a notch or two so that the overall impact isn't going to hit us so hard with renewal time comes back around?
2) If you're not donating to our Patreon, and you enjoy what we offer and want to see the site remain where it's at and not have to worry about moving to a different provider or different hosting service which might not be as reliable for us, then mull over if you can support us via our Patreon. Just a few extra people at $5 per month would be enough to cover that inflationary difference and keep the lights on for us.
Our target goal would be a total of about $35 per month, so as to pay server costs, taxes, blah blah blah, and keep us going for multiple years as inflation continues its ever present influence on life.
100% of all funds earn go to our server fees, with the only exception being 8% which Patreon takes out for their own processing and transfer fees.
Help if you can. If you enjoy what we do, sign up and help keep the lights on and the hamsters fed so we don't have to worry about trying to sort out any issues with moving to some other cheaper and perhaps less reliable host in the future.
