when I tried to install libcurl-dev I was given the option to install one of four different libcurl versions, there's a tiny chance that the PI froze because I chose the wrong libcurl

Unfortunately the Pi 3 only has 1GB of memory, that's not enough to compile QB64 and is likely why the whole thing froze. You can confirm this by watching the memory usage during the compilation. A Pi 4 or 5 with 4GB of memory should be able to do it though, I think (but I'm not sure I've ever tried it).

Perhaps we could consider offering a prebuilt version for the Pi, since it's asked about fairly often - QB64 itself will work just fine even with only 1GB of memory, it's really just the initial compile that's the big problem.
