Win 10 Users. No more Windows F'updates!

Well, I run Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 on a bunch of systems, and none of those ever blew up. Probably your SSD needed a firmware upgrade, or it reached the end of its life.

Couldn't have been end of life, the computer is 2 years old and I haven't even filled up the SSD halfway, or written to the drive any more than normal use. I did install firmware upgrades whenever it prompted for it (a couple of times in the past couple months). I already have had no faith in the resiliency of computers, but it just seems like they're no more reliable now than they were back in the days of Windows 9.x!

I prefer Windows over Apple and Linux, but Microsoft pisses me off with their force their crap down your drive when you don't want it marketing.

I'm currently without a computer - Windows blew up and my SSD is unreadable. There was all this stuff in the news about how the Windows 24H2 or whatever update bricks solid state drives, then a bunch of stuff "debunking" it. Well, maybe it isn't all bunk after all. I have been backing up, not as often as I should apparently, so if I can't recover my files it might not be catastrophic, but it will be damn annoying. I don't know exactly where the blame lies, but I know that Windows is the thing on the computer that changed (and changed again... and again... all these damn endless updates of buggy beta release software! Is it me or has continuous development come to mean a bunch of bozos selling their wine before it's time? This kind of thing is wearing away my patience with them, there has to be a better way.

I have had this problem before. Windows killed my hard drive more than once. I'm now currently running Zorin OS on my gaming PC. I love it. My wife and I use it for playing Far Cry 5 in the evenings.

i'm sorry that you have to go through that.  after reading about that.

junk is being built more often as we speak.

i bought a portable asus computer at best buy near beginning of 2022.  right now for about the same price of a bit over 200usd.  at office max.  could buy one by hewlett-packard i think.  with pretty much the same specifications.  two-core cpu intel celeron nxxxx series.  only 4gb ram.  only 64gb "card" internal storage, not true ssd nor nvme.  but it does look nice!

to get 8gb ram and 128gb storage.  have to pay 150usd more.  not sure if the cpu would improve there.  forget about independent gpu on such a portable computer.

it looks like the screws have to be loosened.  from the bottom shell of the asus computer.  to get to the battery.  otherwise it might fail to charge.  then i might not be able to use the computer.  another computer did that to me.  when the screen broke of that.  i had it fixed.  then sold that computer because i already paid double price for issues it had.

the asus "chip" drive.  originally had windows10.  last year i replaced it with spirallinux "bookworm" with cinnamon desktop, debian clone.  its performance is ok but could be better.  especially if i knew how to replace an internal disk.

computers like that as they are.  aren't really good for jumping linux distributions at all.  on the computer i sold.  i got rid of windows10 early.  wound up changing the linux about five times.  manjaro with kde.  fedora 38 with mate.  early this year before selling it, opensuse "tumbleweed" but the exton edition with lxqt desktop.

also be careful with the usb 3.x disks to use with such computers.  because the port is "usb-c" doesn't make it slick enough.  disks could get dirtied.  then a movie or operating system backup which is megabytes in size.  could refuse to operate.  it might be only my equipment's fault.  but the prices of those pluggable disks aren't changing.  while one could just decide to quit.  getting 2tb or more of external storage.  is just more stuff to lose.  when it suddenly blows up.  that's just too much money and peace of mind to lose.
