You guys are weird. 
All I was ever taught in school was a simple circle with 0 = east, 90 = north, 180 = west, 270 = south. As such:

Now, isn't this the same as what everyone else was taught in school?
X axis gets larger going from right to left.
Y axis gets larger going from bottom to top.
