The single letter things arise around a style or convention. i, x, y, dx, dy, mx, my, mb or mb1 if there is an mb2 s$ for string, n or num for integer usually or any number not scientically noted... which need explanation?

I do get a feeling of defensiveness. But OK forums are about sharing ideas, good.
