Getting the QB64 Message Out There
#11
You know guys QB64 originated as a project to keep QBasic programs working on "modern" operating systems. I'd say the lineage of developers took it waaaaaaay past that goal. A lot of the stuff I code today surpasses the old memory limits of QuickBASIC. I can't tell you how much I don't miss fiddling with one character variables, no remarks, creating programs in a multi-modular construct to extend memory capability, and painstakingly using the CLEAR statement to allocate memory and stack space jut to get a working completed program to run.

So I'm so happy that I didn't bother switching to any other language. QB64 developers did a great job of keeping QB64 BASIC. Well yes, I am in John's camp with the hope of someday seeing the language include the ability to put arrays in UDTs but that's more a matter of convenience than an all-out obstacle to coding. Now things like hardware acceleration, open and save files, message boxes, and some other nice bells and whistles, I'm super appreciative.

As far as the community attracting more youngins... Wait, what do you mean? The forum owner is a youngin... well, relatively speaking. I mean for most of us here, what we should be asking for in an upcoming release is funeral benefits and a coupon for Depends.

Oh, and as a forum owner myself, one piece of advice about stirring the pot; you almost always end up with community dissension despite the best of intentions. In communities with a rapidly growing membership, that usually leads to split factions, but in a stable community, it could simply lead to forum apathy. Speaking for myself, I'd rather have folks a bit underwhelmed, at times, but mostly happy.
