Rock Jockey 2.0 is ready for action
#1
And now, just in time for X-Mas fun, here's my space game. I posted version one of this arcade-style game as a WIP six months ago. Now I think it's done - I think I've actually finished writing a computer game - omg! Many thanks to Terry Ritchie, MasterGy, bplus and Amazing Steve for the routines I stole - and attributed to them.

I've added difficulty levels, so, if you haven't played before, start on the easy setting. If you run out of ships, the cheat code for more is lower case 'm'. Please lemme know if you find any bugs or have any suggestions for improvement. Someday I may make this joystick compatible, but since joysticks don't work on MacOS in QB64pe maybe Santa will bring me a dusty, old PC. The game has seven different sections and back in June I think only Cobalt got past the middle landing scene. Now I've made the game more forgiving, so I hope everybody can get to the end in round 2.  Smile

EDIT: I updated the zip file after @Grymmjack told me about the file extension case sensitivity issue in Linux. It worked fine for me on a Mac as it was - but now I know. Thnx.

OK @NakedApe

Downloaded, unzipped, and tried to run in v4.0.0 Linux.

Ran into issue where your file extensions letter casing does not match your code.

Here is an annotated screenshot.

To fix it, change all of the files referenced in the file system to use the same case as that in your program. I know Windows doesn't care, but Linux and mac both care.

You can use a program like KRename in linux to do this (see screenshot), or something like Bulk Rename Utility in Windows: https://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/ (quick google). I use TotalCommander or DoubleCommander myself on both OSes but wanted to share so you have a easy fix?

I have made the changes for you. Because of bulk rename I made them all lowercase.

Right now the game controls a little strange for me. I am trying to steer with the mouse, but it hits some kind of limit and won't turn the ship?

Might be a Linux only issue though. Are we supposed to be able to move the mouse in any direction -- up, down, left, right, to turn?

@NakedApe Also I hope you don't mind I am trying something new here, where notable finished projects can get more exposure on QB64pe Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/QB64pe/comments...or_action/

I also used the Atari 2600 Label Maker to make it stand out on reddit a bit - https://www.labelmaker2600.com/ (see screenshot)

If you want me to I can take it down, but I thought this would be good to give your game more players.

Happy Holidays!

Also @NakedApe I encourage you to possibly put your finished game up on itch.io or something Smile Make sure you take it farther than this forum!

Hey @grymmjack. Thanks for all your help on this! In the instructions it explains that the ship is steered by moving the mouse laterally - side to side, not up and down. Try that instead.

I think this is really cool, but the game isn't setup for joystick use fyi. I mentioned that in the first post. Maybe you could edit that? I'll check out the link. I'm not familiar with qb64pe on reddit. EDIT: Also I updated the first post with a new .zip - thanks for pointing out the file extension case issue.

Looks like a bunch of people checked out this game. I count 67 downloads including grymmjack’s post and my original post, plus the ten before I uploaded a revised copy… and yet nobody’s given any feedback except grymmjack. Does it need more work? Has it crashed on you? Is it fun? Does it blow chunks? Any feedback is appreciated. Happy New Year to all!  Smile
